21st ARMY GROUP D-DAY CAMP

21st D-Day Army Camp Experience.

Step back into June 1944 and walk among the soldiers preparing for the greatest amphibious operation in history.

The 21st D-Day Army Camp is a fully immersive living-history experience inspired by the men of the 21st Army Group, the Allied force commanded by General Montgomery during the Normandy landings. This is not a static display, but a living, breathing wartime encampment.

Visitors can freely explore the camp and engage with knowledgeable reenactors portraying British and Commonwealth troops as they would have appeared on the eve of D-Day.

You’ll see:

  • Authentic World War II tents, equipment, and field setups

  • Period uniforms, weapons, and personal kit explained in detail

  • Daily life in a forward army camp, from rations and routines to preparation for deployment

  • Informal talks and demonstrations throughout the day

Reenactors are always happy to answer questions, share stories, and bring the human side of history vividly to life.

A living link to D-Day

The camp focuses on realism and education, offering a grounded insight into the soldiers who trained, waited, and departed from southern England for Normandy. It complements the wider Southwick Revival experience by placing faces, voices, and lived experience alongside the strategic history of the site.

Whether you’re a lifelong history enthusiast or encountering this period for the first time, the 21st D-Day Army Camp offers a powerful, atmospheric window into the final moments before D-Day.

Good to know...

Tickets are free.
You can pre-book your preferred time slot when purchasing your tickets, or if you decide on the day, simply head to the bus stop in the centre of the village to join the next available departure.

The 21st D-Day Army Camp is an optional add-on experience and is only valid with a General Entry, Weekend, or Experience ticket.

Come and wander the camp, listen to the stories, and feel the quiet tension of history just before it changed the world.

Once through the checkpoint at the woodland entrance, visitors will be walking on hard track surface – total distance 700 metres.

Seating will be available on logs and tree trunks along the way.

Visitors may spend as much time as they wish in the woodland camp before boarding the shuttle bus to return to the village event.

Buses will run at intervals determined by when they are filled with 20 – 22 people.

As D-Day approached, troops and ordnance was amassing close to the embarkation points on the South Coast.

In a 200 acre wood on the edge of the village of Southwick was the encampment of the 21st Army Group, where they were preparing for the launch of Operation Overlord.

Closely guarded by RMP, briefings and training exercises filled the days in the countdown to 6th June.
